I grew up introverted and spoke less confidently in the midst of some friends and family. I say “some” because I quickly realized that I was extroverted around some other people (around some friends and a couple of teachers-especially when participating in school activities). I guess I was what some would call an ambivert. An ambivert is a person with both introvert and extrovert qualities, but I digress.
On the whole, I did not grow up with a lot of confidence-boosting from the people close to me, which contributed to that part of me which was tight-lipped and timid. I wouldn’t speak up in the midst of some people, would barely give a full sentence in response when I was asked a question, and if I did talk my voice would give me away – my lack of confidence in those circles permeated through my voice. Ironically, I was a chatter box in the midst of some other groups of people; clearly the traits of an ambivert.
Notwithstanding those limitations, I knew I was not inherently shy or timid so I decided to change. By intentionally taking some steps from the time I was in Junior Secondary School, I became more confident and outspoken. I have since gone to work in media and communications with both an undergraduate and masters degree in communication studies.
In my adult life, I have witnessed some shy people transform to become confident communicators, and as someone who has a zero to hero story in achieving this, I share with you some of the key tips that have helped me which will be useful for your own transformation.
