I was not crazy about starting a blog a year ago. I was jobless and worked hard on an unpaid internship and all I wanted was to find a job, work hard on the job and earn an income. Thankfully, I found a job and all I was doing was living from paycheck-to-paycheck. I knew deep within me that I needed a side hustle. That was when blogging came in.
How Did I See Potential in Blogging?
About five years ago, I started a blog which was hosted free on blogger. I attended several blogging events at the time, but I no idea what it meant to earn an income blogging until signed on to Pinterest (which I did only because I was interested in learning new things).
And woohoo! That was the gateway to my new adventure.
I enjoyed reading blog posts because most of them seemed to have answers to all the information I needed (and still do). I needed inspiration and ideas, and some blog posts gracefully provided them.
The turning point was when I started reading posts on blogging including income reports (before then, I was mostly interested in reading self-care and lifestyle blogs).
Seeing how blogging had changed some people’s lives by reading their stories and income reports opened my eyes to reality.
How can providing relevant content on a blog double as a business? I knew I could start blogging the right way and make it good.
This was double excitement for me because I knew I would be doing what I love (communication) and make money alongside.
I have broken down the 5 reasons why I started a blog below and I have explained them in a bit more detail.
1. An Outlet to Provide Solutions
As I said before, blogs have been phenomenal in helping me find information and that is exactly why I started a new blog.
I get so grateful and excited when I go online in search of a solution, and I find it well-written and in one blog post.
Just as I receive, I want to give back. I know that finding information on lifestyle challenges, new ideas, perspectives and overall, information on becoming a better individual is vital to personal growth and I want to be with you on that journey.
I want to save you the time and stress in finding self- improvement information, which also doubles as an outlet for me to write about the things I love.
I love food (yeah, I know) and searching for new recipes online is one of my favorite things in the world, so when I was starting my blog, I figured I would blog about food.
After some introspection and being true to myself, I knew it would be more realistic and exciting to write about the things I love reading most from other blogs.
I love reading about skin and beauty, confidence, personal finance, a bit about health and fitness and generally, becoming the very best of myself through simple, consistent practices.
These are things I love, read about and practice and I am consistently sharing ideas with you to help us grow together. If you think we share similar interests, check out the FREE Self-Improvement Workbook.
Some people have problems and cannot afford to talk about or share with their friends and family and I am glad I get to share life-changing blog posts which are relevant, authentic and practical.
2. To Earn an Income
Of course, I want to earn an income blogging. What is a hustle if you are not earning an income from it? As I indicated earlier, it’s been paycheck-to-paycheck and that is not financially sound.
Like many other bloggers, reading income reports from my favorite bloggers (and even newbie bloggers) has been inspiring for me to keeping working hard, to diversify my income and take care of other needs which are currently difficult to achieve.
If I’m enjoying blogging, then I should as well earn an income doing it.
Some bloggers earn a full-time income blogging and working from home sounds cool (not sure when I’ll get there). Honestly, I feel I would really make use of the money.

3. Give Blogging Another Shot
The very first time I started a blog was in my early years at the university (first or second, not sure when exactly) when a lecturer asked each one of us to start a blog as a requirement to score marks in his course (I guess it was his way of introducing us to blogging). Like the other students, I created a blog on blogger. I did not enjoy the process, but I did it for the marks anyway.
After that process, I started my own hobby blog called ‘The Complete Woman’, hosted free on blogger. That was another terrible experience because it failed completely and I could not keep it up. Find out why my first blog failed here.
Let me explain why.
I knew I loved talking about issues concerning women and their place in society but when I started blogging about the topic, I couldn’t stay consistent.
I guess it was for two reasons: I did not understand exactly how far blogging could take me and my ideas, and because it felt like a chore, especially writing with only a few or no readers at all.
The blog has been around for about 5 years but I am not sure I have more than 20 posts on it (yea, embarrassing. Haha!), plus it was hosted free on blogger. That was a beginner’s adventure but now I’m here to stay. I want to be consistent now with improved content while I invest in blogging education.

4. To Use the Internet Productively
I’m sure you might have heard this so many times, but I cannot help but repeat the fact that the internet is a great resource. And like you (or maybe not) I used to spend a lot of time online and on social media and that was a bother to me.
So, I thought to myself; if I’m doing all these hours on social media, why not engage in productive activities. Blogging helps me to do just that.
These days I spend more time researching blogging, content management and things which will add value to my blog. It’s not easy finding a balance and I’m still struggling with this but I’m seeing progress.
5. Own an Online Business
Now let me tell you a little secret. It’s been a huge dream of mine to run a restaurant business. I love good food and I believe the food we eat influences our health, looks, and mood (this is the second time I’m mentioning food, I know). So, I’ve always wanted to help people eat healthier meals.
However, for now, I want to blog and be part of the ever-growing online community.
Like any other business, my focus now is to provide quality, and the most valuable products on the market (content-wise). You are my priority now, and I want to work hard to give you useful information always.
The only way I will be pleased with any earning from my blogging business is when my audience (which includes you) is satisfied and find value in the content I create.
Therefore, I encourage comments and take feedback seriously. In case you did not know before, my readers (including you) are my priority.
Conclusion
You can start a blog as an outlet to provide solutions or information on a subject of interest. You can also start a blog to earn income, own an online business or use the internet productively.
You can start a blog too. With determination, consistent learning and the right attitude, your blog will grow and change lives, including yours.
These are the reasons I started blogging. Why did you start or want to start a blog? I’d love to hear from you. Let’s interact.

I agree with #4. I find that my online time has been much more focused and productive since I started my blog. Now I have something to show for some of that time I spend in front of a screen. 🙂
Absolutely Shiela. Blogging has a great way of keeping you productive on the internet:)
